Henny Penny's Puppy Story
Follow Penny and her carer Em, through the adventure of raising a little family.
Penny was surrendered to Renbury Farm by her owners on the 13th June 2015.
Late in the afternoon I contacted Renbury Farm Shelter on the off chance Henny Penny may be able to come into our care, she did, Penny was heavily pregnant and needed to be out of the pound as soon as possible so she didn't have her pups in the shelter, and to give her the best chance of having the pups safely, and to not have her in a stressed state for any longer than she had to be with all the environment changes she was experiencing.
On the 14th of June we had everything lined up, Penny was coming to us, I had prepared a room in the house that Penny could call her own, no stress of having to mix with other dogs, and get her bearings, to know she was safe and this was her new home. Creature Comforts Transport did a special mercy dash to get her to me, her own private escort into care. Such a special couple who I can never thank enough.

14th June 2015 Arrival Date
When I first meeting Henny Penny, all you could see was belly, she was uncomfortable and ready for some pampering, some yummy food and a bed to rest in.
Penny's belly was so large it was hard for her to get comfortable .Numerous beds were trialed and finally be big pink squishy one was her favourite, other than my lap, poor Penny couldn't get totally comfortable there no matter how hard she tried, as her belly always got in the way, so sometimes it was her head on the lap with the front paws, and her back legs standing on the ground, Penny showed immediately how much she loved people and how she was comfortable with my presence, I was pleasantly surprised with this, I was prepared for her to need some space, but she wanted affection from the time I held her on my lap on the way home.
Henny Penny was such a relaxed and lovely girl that has given me the feeling that she has always been around and the trust she put in me shone throughout the whole transition. She is an amazing soul.

15th June 2015 - Off To Meet Dr G
We were off to the vets for a check up on Monday the 15th, we didn't know when Penny was due, and not something that is always easy to gauge, but Penny was given the tick of approval that all was progressing well with a time frame of a few days, to two weeks and only her slim frame being of concern and lots of good food was a priority.
So back home we went, and Penny rested up being fed all good things to help her put on some much needed weight and given lots of cuddles and hours of attention that she desired.

18th June 2015 - Ready For Babies
In the early hours of the 18th it looked like Penny was going into labour, but a few hours later, all things seemed to stop and she was back to her normal self, I spent a sleepless night watching her and we were back to the vets to make sure all was okay.
Diagnosis was that Penny had no milk but was all ready for labour, and an ultrasound was done to ensure all pups were healthy and no intervention was needed. I was so thankful all was well, after a few tears, it was back home to her room to wait for the impending arrival.

19th - 20th June Babies Arrive
At 7:30pm of the 19th Penny began to have contractions and at 8:30pm the first bundle of joy arrived, Penny took care of her first bub so well all I could do was watch and wait. I was prepared to not be in the room with her if she showed she was uncomfortable with my presence again, but still she was relaxed and happy for me to be around, I offered her some water when she looked at the bowl and then back up at me, it was a long night, but one that was amazing. Henny Penny was cleaning and nudging all her babies as they came out, resting in between, and allowing the new pups to start to feed. The last pup arriving at 7am on the 20th. All pups were feeding and Penny showed to be the best Mother dog, cleaning and feeding and taking care of her beautiful pups it was rest time for us all. Penny had done it, she was a Mumma dog of 6 beautiful puppies.
After the fright the night before, Penny began labour, and everything went smoothly.
BB1 - born at 8:30pm - female - little white line on her head BB2 - born at 9:30pm - boy - big white blaze between his eyes and big pink nose BB3 - born at 1:30am - girl - black face, tiny pink nose, little white V on the back of her head, a black spot on her right front leg BB4 - born at 2:30am - boy - black face, a wedge of white on the back of his head BB5 - born at 3:30am - girl - tan coloured head and patches BB6 - born at 8:00am - girl - white with pale caramel patch on back and behind her right ear |
Runtie BB1
It became clear within two days that BB1 was the runt of the litter, when Penny had her babies, you could see three were smaller than the others, but two are doing well (brown and white pups - BB5 and BB6) BB1 stayed smaller.
BB1 had not put on weight as fast as the others, she is staying significantly smaller and has needed some help when feeding otherwise her bigger siblings shove her out of the way during feeding time.
Henny Penny's kind nature showed again and allowed me too assist BB1 get some extra milk time and monitor BB1 closely. :)
There is nothing physically wrong with BB1, she latches on well, drinks with gusto, no lethargy, she is warm and pink, after researching it seems that some pups can in fact be premmie due to different conception times. BB1 is just smaller, but no less healthy than the others and is slowly gaining weight and keeping up in the food line. I worried and I kept close watch for any signs that may have made it necessary to get a veterinary review, it never came to that, BB1 is tenacious and will be interested to see her personality develop, if week 1 was anything to go by, she will be a girl with determination and resilience that will know what she wants and what she doesn't.

Time Flies, We're One Week Old!

One week on, all 6 pups are growing bigger before my eyes. BB1 a bit slower than others, but still growing bigger than she was.
Penny is still being the perfect Mum to her pups, she cleans and feeds them all the time, doting on them constantly. I think Henny Penny is enjoying being waited on, hand fed if necessary as Penny will stay with her pups until they finish feeding. Penny is getting a great variety of high quality food, chicken necks being a favourite as well as egg and chicken.
Henny Penny is such a sweet dog, after all she has been through in a week she has so much trust, it just makes her more endearing.
The pups are enjoying drinking and sleeping, it truly is a hard puppy life.

30th June - More Baby Photos
Reflecting on week one there has been so many little changes, I feel lucky to witness it, all the pups are turning into little budda’s so round and squishy, then are starting to push themselves more, and to watch them feed, I feel for Henny Penny, they are determined to get the milk out, that is for sure. After a week of watching BB1 so closely and worrying that she may not thrive, but now she seems to be getting herself a little budda belly even though smaller and she is getting tougher in getting her share of milk.
Their tiny ears are slowly folding out and it won’t be long until their little eyes open.
BB6 who was very white is now getting dark pigmentation on her nose, her cream patches on her back and behind her ear are darkening. She is changing.
BB4 has big tan spots growing from this blackened face, but still having difficulty remember which one is which (thankfully BB3 is a girl and BB4 is a boy)
Watching them cuddle up together after a filling their bellies is just adorable.
Watching Henny Penny being a great Mum and now coming out for regular cuddles after she has made sure her pups are attended to, she is such a clean dog, her puppies just shine. Even though I may have said this a million times already, she is an amazingly natured dog who is the sweetest and I imagine her future when she is no longer having pups, and can be carefree and in a loving home, just for her, no more babies ever, she deserves nothing less.
There is lots of washing and cleaning to do with them, but it all seems worth It, cooking Henny Penny meals and making sure she has all she needs to support her skinny body as well as 6 healthy pups seems like no trouble.

Photo's During Week 2

WEEK 2
This week has flown again, they seem so small and precious and every day they grow. They have all turned into little Buddha's this week, even BB1 who was on the regular watch of making sure she got enough milk without her siblings pushing her out of the way, this week she turned the corner, well and truly, and is making sure none of them get in her way. She has put on enough weight to know she is holding her own and making up for week 1.
They are all chubby and healthy looking, Henny Penny is still being the dotting Mumma dog she is, my job is to take care of her while she takes such good care of her bub's, she is eating a lot and I am cooking and trying to figure out ways to keep up with how much she will eat and how much feeding 6 pups can take away from her. It is a challenge, but Henny Penny loves her food which helps.
All the bubs are still drinking sleeping and being super cute and becoming little pups that will eventually show all their little personalities. Some of the pups have unique little spots on their paws, they are so beautiful, their little ears are starting to unfold and soon they will hear, and next their eyes will start opening. BB6 who was almost pure white when born is now sporting a black nose and darkening caramel coloured patches through out her body. BB4 tends to sleep belly up. They are all having puppy dreams and making little squeaks, twitching and stretching in their sleep. Just a beautiful process.

WEEK 3
It seems like everyday they are growing and are so big and healthy looking pups. They have started opening their eyes and trying to walk. Two have shown interest in puppy food, it makes a right, royal mess, but very cute to see them trying to balance and clumsily attempt to lick the food.
They are now doing the cutest growl and yap, so little and a good try can over balance them if they are sitting up doing it. Just sweetest thing to witness.
Henny Penny is eating like a horse and has a big job keeping the pups fed and clean, she is still working on them tirelessly. Over the coming weeks they will depend on her less and less so she will have some free time on her hands and get back to being a carefree dog. Penny is still the same sweet dog and has no problems with me being with her, or her pups, a testament to her loving nature and trust in humans.

WEEK 4
Such a busy week and so much growing has been done, they are getting harder to photograph as they don't like staying still any more, they have their sea legs well and truly, they are walking and bumping into everything. They now hear my voice and hop up and come walking to me. They all enjoy their Mumma's food, they are not overly effective in eating it, but once covered in it, Penny cleans them up like they had never been in her food. They enjoy her lamb shanks and try to eat it with no luck, no teeth yet! They are growling and barking and trying to play in the most uncoordinated way.
This week also requires their second worming, and their teeny tiny nails to be trimmed.
They have grown into little puppies and are no long new born, the time seems to go so quickly, maybe too quickly if I am honest, but also can't wait for Penny's mothering duties to be done. She is ever so patient with them and panders to all their needs.
Some seem to have longer hair than a smooth coated Mini Foxie, it will be interesting to see if they stay like that, or if it may be their puppy coat.
This week a lovely surprise was sent to the little family, they now have their own blankets and 6 larger blankets, thank you to Animal Rescues Appeal and their wonderful supporter who is amazingly generous.

WEEK 6
What changes can come in a week!
6 little walking, eating, teething, howling, barking little pups have developed. Exploring and testing everything, they are playing with toys, walking around trying 'adult food', responding when called, they are still so little, and a bit fluffier than their Mum Henny Penny, each are developing different personalities and growing at various rates. Names have been picked, this week is the trial run of their names and in the coming week I will put them up, I hope you like them as much as we do. All are still so cute, and if you let their cuteness fool you, they are not so innocent any more, they like biting fingers and toes. |
Nails have been trimmed again, and attempting to toilet train onto pee pads has begun.
Chicken and beef mince is a personal favourite of them all, and they don't mind chewing on a yummy, big lamb shank either.

WEEK 7 - We have names and boy are we little pocket rockets
This week is going to be an interesting one, they can definitely see, they are rumbling and eating, and pooping and sleeping. They are doing this in cycles of hourly turn around time, such a cute active age. Everything must be tasted and played with and if liked, they drag it around with them wherever they may go.
I am going to put up a photo of each puppy and their name during the week (so please check back often), I hope you like them as much as we all do.

BB3 - Introducing Cheeky

What can I say? Cheeky is cheeky but knows how to pull off adorable so well she can away with her cheeky nature.
Cheeky's markings looks so similar to her brother BB4, it is sometimes to tell them apart, thankfully one is a girl and one is a boy to make it clear which one is which. Now with their personalities developing, they are becoming easier , it is funny how differently each pup's personality is.

BB6 - Introducing Minty
Minty was pure white when born, slowly she has developed pigmentation her nose, and her coat has changed into light caramel markings on her face, and big circles of it on her back. Her ears now stand on end and is just divine.
Minty loves her food, enjoys a good rumble with her siblings and is a confident little girl. |
BB4 - Introducing Barnaby
BB5 - Introducing Daisy
Little Daisy, she is so stumpy and short compared to her siblings, she is wide, but her legs are short and sturdy, her ears are so expressive, if she gets scared or cranky, she pulls them straight back and trots off with a strut.
Daisy loves people and loves cuddling. Daisy looks a bit different than her siblings, not only her colouring, but she was born with wrinkles on her nose, I have been waiting her her nose to pop out and start getting longer, it has slightly, but she still has those wrinkles. |
BB2 - Introducing Badger
BB1 - Introducing Sophie
Sophie was the runt when born, she was strong though and after the first week she really came into her own, as determined as her siblings and her little stature did not stop her getting her share of milk.
This girl is now hilarous, as big as some of her siblings and rumbles with the best of them. She is just divine. |

Tee Pee Time
This week saw the babies change into these teeny tiny dogs, they are running amok and the world is their oyster and nothing is standing in their way (well yes there is, but we can't let that ruin their story). They are needing lots of things to chew on, their teeth must try out everything they come across including feet!
Anna entered an Instagram Competition, and she won!! A Little Puppy Called Milly (www.alittlepuppycalledmilly.com.au) make some beautiful beds and Teepee's that would make a cute little hut inside the house, or a beautiful shaded area outside.
We won a beautiful Teepee and it arrived on Friday, today with the day being so beautiful, the puppies needing to explore and burn some of their energy off we broke out the Teepee and had some fun, the puppies loved it, they played and rumbled and chewed on it and found it quite cosy up the back, just right to lay down and have a rest.
I may have gotten carried away with the photo's, but I hope you like them as much as the puppies and I had fun taking them.
If you are on Instagram take a look at the lovely Teepee's available, or their website, or on Facebook.

WEEK 8
Cheeky Monkeys!! Nothing will stop them rumbling, chewing, eating, drinking, playing, making the cutest attempts to growl, barking in a tiny voice.
This week saw them become funnier still, if that is possible. They also had their first outing into the world, and visited the vet, all got the tick of puppy approval, all are healthy and had their first vaccination. I thought it had been so much for them, they were quiet all the way home, I thought they were ready for bed, they had other idea's, they began their usual antic's and it was like the trip never happened.
Henny Penny is now getting big breaks for them and just pops in to check on them, as they rumble all over her, they have met some resident dogs and love to rumble with them as well.
The smallest of things they can make fun out of, I have a small wooden chest, they get under it and rumble and protect their 'lair' from the outsider puppy intruders. You could give them a cardboard box and they would have the best fun.
Photo's are getting harder to get as they are turning out blurry as they run and play throughout the day, so only a few shots worked out this week.

WEEK 9 - Fun in the sun
╰⊰✿´ ╰⊰✿´╰⊰✿´╰⊰✿´╰⊰✿´╰⊰✿´
WEEK 10
Playing, rumbling, everything having to be tasted, electrical cords are hidden. Toilet training is in progress. Henny Penny is guiding them and giving them rules and not letting them get into trouble. She is a busy girl, if she has nothing to do, she loves hopping up and having a cuddle. Also when outside with the pups, she plays zoomies, she runs like the wind and seems to have a ball.
Puppies are looking cute and innocent, but, oh boy, are they mischief in the cutest form. All have their own little personalities and distinct looks.
The world is full of wonder and everything is new and exciting. They have so much to learn, and so much to do, every day they are growing. The time seems to be going so fast.

Penny's puppies are now looking for their forever homes
Our pups are Mini Foxie crosses - Father is unknown, so we cannot determine what the cross is or the pups final height or appearance will be.
All our beautiful pups are going to be very active, nimble dogs, and need training and regular exercise.
Currently all puppies are learning lead training so they will hopefully be use to the feeling of a lead and harness so they will be ready for puppy school when they have joined their new family, and had all three vaccinations.
All prospective owners will need to be ready for a very young pup that will need direction and guidance for many months, everything is new and interesting, chewing is a must, so they need to be directed to things they are allowed to chew, and what they are not, house training will be on-going.

Badger is Adopted
Badger is now looking for his forever home.
Badger has long ballerina legs and a foxy face like his Mum. He is very inquisitive and loves to play and rumble with his siblings. Badger seems like a perfectionist, he really wants to learn and will quietly sit behind his brother and sisters and is content there, not competing for attention. He prefers to watch and take it all in. Badger is going to be an active intelligent boy who will be keen to learn. We're not sure what his ears are doing. |
╰⊰✿´ ╰⊰✿´╰⊰✿´╰⊰✿´╰⊰✿´╰⊰✿´
Barnaby Is Adopted.
Barnaby, or as I have nicknamed him 'Barnaby the Explorer', loves to go and investigate everything and is always the last one to come when called and has the shortest attention span. Everything in the world needs checking out!
He is active like his brother and sister's. Unlike tall elegant Mum, Barnaby has short legs with a longer body. Barnaby is a bit of a free spirit and lead training is not his favourite activity, but he has picked it up, and will sit for a while until he sees something he must investigate He and his sister Cheeky get on really well and seem to complement each other. |

Sophie Is Adopted
Long legs and finer frame, she is a bit like her Mum. She will be a sweet elegant Audrey Hepburn girl.
She is so soft and gentle, but then has a playful side. I think Sophie would have to be the softest of all the pups, she has the sweetest nature, and as much as she puppy plays, she is just gentle and loving. Needing kisses and cuddles. She loves to please people so will be easy to train and would enjoy a home where she can just be adored and follow her human around. |

Cheeky has been adopted
Cheeky is another Audrey Hepburn. So delightfully dainty and sweet.
Cheeky can be reserved at first, and watches the room before deciding what to do. (Or pondering a plan of attack when it comes to rumble time.) After that she is off and ready to play, she is fairly gentle when she plays and gets pushed out of the way when playing with Minty. Actually they all get pushed out of the way when playing with fat little Minty! Cheeky is so soft you can't help but scoop her up and cradle her puppy cuteness in your arms. |

Daisy has been Adopted.
Daisy is such a darling girl. Almost the odd one out. Small, short and wide. Maybe Penny found her in the cabbage patch.
Her little forehead has always had wrinkles. Curiosity brings her ears forwards and her little wrinkles scrunch up .... she looks like she is thinking hard. Her small stature do not hold her back, she loves playing and running amok. It's just a funny style of running, like the little kid at school trying to keep up with her mates. Once Daisy as finished playing, she loves curling up like a doggy donut with another dog on the lounge and having a rest. Watching her run in her sleep is hilarious. Daisy has mastered sitting, is being taken out and finding out about the big wide world, and learning about car rides and harnesses. |

WEEK 13
All the puppies have had their second vaccination and will be getting desexed soon. They have commenced lead training, and learning how to sit. They are picking it up fast. It is safe to say they will be intelligent and active like their Mum.
September 22nd; We're learning how to sit!!!! Yay us 😊😊😊
October 10th
All the pups have had their third vaccination, and are almost ready to be socialised to the outside world. They have been practicing sitting for a while now, and have mastered that.
Each dog is developing their own personality and showing how unique and special they all are;
Sophie (on the left) - she is a soft girl who wants to please and tries hard at everything she does.
Barnaby (second left at the back) - he is an explorer and is a busy boy that is constantly finding things he needs to do.
Daisy (at the front) - she has short legs, but is getting a wide chest, she loves to play and rumble with her siblings, and seems to be in the middle of all the mischief being had.
Cheeky (back second from the right) - she is a timid quiet girl, while she loves to run and play, loud noises startle her, and she will be looking for a nice quiet home.
Badger (far right) - along with Daisy, Badger can be found in the middle of mischief, he has such a pointy nose and fine legs like his Mum, he has the right mixture of sensitivity and puppy sense of adventure, he is easy to love.

* Remember, terriers aren't famous for living happily with pocket pets and chooks. It will vary from puppy to puppy though. Kitten and small puppy can work. :) They can become besties like Mini Foxy Speedy and his friend Mitten.

Adoption Updates
Rafal (formerly Badger)
Frankie (formerly Cheeky)

Frankie has two cats she now calls her siblings and has lovely play dates with her Golden retriever friend.
Frankie is super active and her owner is just delighted to have such a beautiful girl to share her life with, and we couldn't be happier for all of them.
