Each one of our beautiful Fab 5 have their individual problems we'll be working through. We're 100% focussed on the rehabilitation of our little family.
(Please note, we will not be accepting any applications or expressions of interest for the Fab 5. We will advise when each dog is available for adoption and open to taking applications. It will be at different times as each dog has their own hurdles to get through). #lucilleandella #ssrfab5
The Fab 5 are recovering from life as backyard breeding dogs (BYB).
They are the hidden reality behind pets for profit. Squalid small scale puppy farming that's under the radar.
They are the reality behind a perfectly legal, tax free and unregulated cottage industry.
Their babies (Silky Terrier at around min $2,500 a pop) buy new cars, overseas holidays, jewellery, expensive clothes, spending cash .... you never see an enterprising backyard breeder going without the finer things.
BYBers will even double down by seeding their breeding animals into the community, under the guise of a 'free' dog as long as the dog can still be bred from at will.
There's no genetic testing, no health checks, no careful planning of litters and zero care for where the pups go once the cash changes hands.
This little family is predisposed to cataract blindness and patella luxation. Nobody even cared that Lucille and Ella couldn't see their own babies.
And chances are, the puppies who weren't lucky enough to end up as loved family members are probably being bred from right now. And the cycle continues.

Hi guys! 💕 We're coming for you!

27 August 2020 | Genie | First Arrival | Silky Terrier | 11yrs | NSW
This brand new little lady needs lots of TLC and is soaking it all up in her foster home. She's absolutely delightful and we can't wait to bring her the joy of a loving home that she missed out on for 11 years as a puppy maker. She deserves so much and yet expects so little.
Genie is settling in and going (8/9/20) for a full blood panel, desexing, major dental and mammary tumour removal & chest x-ray. She's also having a scope and flush of her ear canals. The treated infection appears to be gone now but she is left with a classic cobblestone texture and narrowed ear canals from a long term infection. So we need to have a really good look inside just in case. |

5th September 2020 | Pickup Day
Pickup day for the rest of the family. It was a big day at RSPCA Yagoona. We had a whole team help us collect and harness. The ladies at the shelter even did the paperwork in advance.
They've spent a month at the shelter putting on weight and being treated for infected skin & ears. All had to be clipped off completely due to the state of their coat.

Dillon | Silky Terrier | 5yrs | NSW
Update - Dylan is a very traumatised boy, even though he loves a pat and a cuddle, when food is around he is food aggressive with other dogs, yet he will not touch his food bowl if a human is around. He will flinch and duck as if his life depended on it. His carer is slowly working on desensitising him from being so scared. We could only guess what has happened to Dillon in the past, we just know it isn't good though.
It is a slow process, trauma like this is not changed overnight. Dillon acts over confident when other dogs are round and acts like an entire male still even though he lost his boy bits long ago. Understandably he was a stress related 'spinner' when in the shelter. He has settled and there is no more tail chasing. And we have to begin teaching him to be a well adjusted pet. He has no manners. No idea what harnesses or walking on leash is. No idea what toys and treats are. And is still wondering where his breeding essentials have gone! |
Pixie | Silky Terrier | 9yrs | NSW
Pixie is a gorgeous girl who is lacking confidence and loves to follow you everywhere for security. We are trying to teach her to be comfortable without having to be stuck to you like glue.
Pixie is so scared she will not eat her dinner if another dog can be seen, we are teaching her that her food is hers and no one needs to fight over food and she is safe to eat dinner around other dogs. Pixie gets quite stressed when taken out of her home, so we are slowly trying to show her the world with baby steps, we do not want her to become too overwhelmed and dump her in the deep end of all the things she has missed out on for her 9yrs Pixie still has dry flaky skin which is slowly resolving itself and needs to put on some weight as well, she is a bit of a skinny girl, we are guessing she was low in the pecking order in the fight for food. |
Ella | Silky Terrier | 5yrs | NSW
Update - Ella has had her cataract surgery and is now recovering with plenty of eye drops and being kept quiet, we are following the instructions on the specialist to the letter. A HUGE thank you to all who donated towards helping with the cost of the surgery, without each one of you, it would not have been possible to give Ella the gift of sight.
Ella is a very sweet but confused girl, she has settled in well at her foster carer's home and is navigating herself to everything, she is pretty amazing. She is a bit feisty, is quite happy to try and eat everyone's food. She has little manners and has a small comfort zone, when she is outside of that she will meltdown if you are not paying attention and watching her body language. We have been spoken with a veterinary opthalmologist who believes Ella will benefit from cataract surgery, being so young and having such advanced cataracts. If Ella does not have surgery she will be at high risk of glaucoma and lens induced uveitis (inflammation inside the eye) and lens luxation. The cost for cataract surgery is high we have an estimate of $5,500 - $6,000 for each girl to have both cataracts removed. The estimate given includes a rescue discount, normally we would be looking at $8000 for each girl to have their eyes done. We're already working on the girl's crate training, a coping skill they will need to use in recovery. Obviously you can't just bring an eye surgery dog home and let them run loose. You also can't just expect them to be fine being crated without proper preparation. They need to be able to stay calm when confined. They will need lots of quiet recovery time in their crates, eye meds, protective cones, dim lighting and gentle harnessed trips for loo breaks. As well as follow-up appointments and checkups. #lucilleandella |

Lucille is blind. 😢 We're waiting to have a long chat with her specialist because we've got a tonne of questions. For cataract surgery alone we've been quoted $5,500 - $6,000 for each girl. 8th September 2020 | Genie's Vet Visit
The matriarch of the Fab 5. 11 years young. 🥰
Genie is almost 100% likely to be Mum and Grandma to our other 4.
She is a kind and gentle lady. Her favourite thing is to enjoy the comfort and safety of her foster home.
Her vetwork list is long, and she spent 2.5hrs under. Desexing. Mammary strip to remove tumours. Dental and numerous extractions of rotten teeth. Chest x-ray. Ear flush. Full comprehensive blood panel which came back clear. Full examination from top to toe. Pain relief, antibiotics and heart medication.
Viewing her x-ray, Genie's vet Dr Shelton saw no metastases in her organs but did find an enlarged heart to match her murmur and faint arrhythmia. He has prescribed Cardisure.
Genie appears to be slightly deaf.
Genie's new home will ideally be experienced with heart problem dogs. Despite the extra needs and expense we believe her forever home is out there.
Please watch the website for updates and we'll let you know when she's ready.
We put a call out to help cover her $1570 vet bill and would like to say a HUGE THANK YOU to donors.
💕 Dianne, Nathan, Lynne, Peter, Kelly, Janet, Julie, Susa, Casey, Paul, Bronwyn, Brooke, Corina, Marilyn, Gail, Robyn, Yolanda, Zita, Helen, Lyn, Lily, Sandra, Lori, Vicki, Adele 💕

2nd October 2020 | Genie Is Ready!
We've taken some supermodel photos and begun her notes.
It's time to start looking for Genie's forever home. After all those years of breeding and breeding, she's finally going to get her very own people to love and care for her like we do. Pop over to the Pets For Adoption page, even if it's just to check out how beautiful she looks now. 💕 |

The Holidays Are Over!
Sorry for the break in information. We'll have more photos for you as soon as the weather allows.
Ella and Lucille are down to one eye drop a day! (Goodbye midnight meds lol).
They are settling in to just being allowed to be house dogs. And take themselves out for toilet, it may take a reminder but they are doing well.
Genie is still waiting for her home. Dillon is due for a patella surgery and Pixie is still a cautious, sensitive little soul.
One thing we're finding out about our Fab 5 is their history is going to follow them to their new homes. It'll be a whole new life for them just like we wish, but they all have some baggage.
Applicants will have to be ready to be gentle and patient. It's possible that our 5 will never be 'normal' in the sense of the word. Possibly (just to prepare you) no trips to Bunnings. No off leash adventures or camping. No cafe days. And by all indications, single dog homes. They will all need some garden, courtyards are fine.
We found this quote and it suits them perfectly.

21 February 2021 | Lucille Update
Getting closer to home! Lucille's eyes are perfect now. Next step is a final physical by our regular vet. We'll let you know the results so you'll be fully informed and she'll get a proper write-up when she's ready for adoption. Don't panic yet, it's not first in best dressed, we select for exactly what the dog needs.
She'll be looking for a single dog home (sadly all these dogs learned that life was a hard struggle for food dominance), with an owner committed and determined to ongoing training and socialisation. Lucille is too vocal for an apartment, and does need a yard or courtyard. And a dog door.
All the serious stuff aside. She is absolutely hilarious. Zoomy, inquisitive and lively. A typical 2yr old terrier. She even digs in the big water bowls. Loves the snuffle mat. And is totally smashing the records here on how quick she can work out an IQ puzzle.

5th March 2021 | Final vet checks for the girls!
Like it says :) the girls are off to our vet tonight, for a top to toe. It's the last step before going up for adoption. Again, don't panic, it's not first in best dressed. We still have to get some notes done and put them on the adoption page and application form before you can apply.
Genie the matriarch is still stretched out on the sofa waiting for her forever home to come along. :(

1st April 2021 | Please Be Kind
Ok, this shouldn't need saying but here goes.......
We're just regular people on the receiving end of your emails, messages and social media posts.
Firstly we need to thank the polite, reasonable and kind people who understand this. 💕 You are awesome.
But I'm afraid the Fab 5 has stirred up a lot of emotion amongst people.
We don't get a kick out of saying no to people. All the information you need is on the profiles and this page too. So please read notes thoroughly. We try to be as painless as possible if we have to decline an application and often it's because the profile hasn't been read properly.
These dogs are special needs for the most part. They are not 'easy' and not for everyone. They look beautiful and perfect, this belies the fact that they have baggage and we're not just trying to make it impossible to adopt.
Bottom line though is, we at SSR don't have to, and will not tolerate poor form from anyone.
Any fake applications, deceptive behaviour, hostile, aggressive or bullying tactics will get you blacklisted within our organisation forever. Simple as that.
If you can't imagine doing any of the above, this little notice will probably have you shaking your head in astonishment. It's something that you just have to deal with in rescue. Shouldn't have to really, and we'll get there with the Fab 5 and things will settle down in time.
Just please remember, be kind.

2nd April 2021 | Dillon the Love Child
Dillon's brains and looks must have come from somewhere. We're voting Fabio & Bon Jovi 😂
In all seriousness, he's more of a hunk than a thinker.
For Dillon, life was all about making lots more little Dillons.
He never really had to stop and ponder life or learn the little things that family dogs do. His carer is working on the basics of course but so far that's about all he's interested in learning. He much prefers trotting around like a show pony. Wind in his hair and the world at his feet!

May 2021 | All About Dillon So Far
Our boy has come a long way since his arrival into care. A scared boy who had only ever known to be a breeding male. His worth was in what litters he could help create.
No time, love, vet care had been given to him. He is under-socialised and underexposed to the world. He has a fear of feet and hands. He would not dare eat his dinner in the presence of other dogs or in front of humans. To witness his fear was very heart wrenching.
With baby steps and a plan, he can now eat cautiously near humans. He will not eat in front of other dogs. Odd behaviour and we can only hazard the guess of how a dog ends up like this.
Nothing good could have happened. Dillon needs to be an only dog as he may not longer make babies but he still acts like a dominant male with other dogs and inappropriate play technique.
He has to be closely monitored with other dogs. He is not aggressive, just dominant and cannot adjust to be around other dogs safely.
Caution on our part which is for Dillon and his future forever home needs. Dillon is slow on being house trained so belly bands are a must to stop the marking. If you are precious about your floors, Dillon is not the boy for your home. Dillon can't quite understand 'sitting' and often ends up with his bottom in the air and his front legs on the ground. Endearing but odd is our Dillon. He is a work in progress.
Dillon will approach strangers slowly and cautiously but once he trusts you he warms up and comes up for regular pats. He is very human focussed.
When out he thinks his ears are painted on and is so excited by all the sights and sounds, even in the quietest or areas it is hard to get him to pay attention. So he will need somone dedicated to make up for his past and work with him on his short comings. Dillon shows signs of separation anxiety and is going to be better in a home where his humans are home more often than not Help Dillon trust that the world is safe and help him find the boundaries so he can be the best Dillon he can be despite his past.
If you are applying for Dillon please take the opportunity to give us the most information you can because we need to know if you are up for the challenge to helping Dillon overcome his past and accept that his past may be carried with him for a significant time to come. He has so much potential even if he isn't able to learn every thing quickly.

July 2021 | Dillon Update
Dearest Dillon! Our flashy little show pony. Not the smartest tool in the shed but he tries hard to learn new things.
Dillon is learning about his new life as companion dog and moving through rehab slowly but surely. We are at a cross roads though........
Most small dogs have some grade of patella (kneebone) luxation (dislocation). But normally you just get a 'skip'. As it pops back into place.
When Dillon goes faster than a walking pace he bears no weight on his left leg at all. It isn't unheard of that dogs get rehomed with bad patella's as they are signed off with a disclosure waiver for the new owner to cover the cost surgery.
There are a lot of factors that make up the question..... Is surgery necessary?
* Dillon is young and highly energetic.
* The high grade of luxation will bring on crepitus (bone crunching on bone) over his life span.
* And a higher chance of cruciate ligament tear.
* He is operable with a fantastic chance of a good outcome.
* He has been examined by our trusted vet and the verdict is his patella is high grade and surgery is recommended.
As a very small rescue, this is our rescue taking another expensive vet bill and we are worried.
But we feel we would not be doing right by Dillon if we do not opt for surgery.
We are needing to raise funds to fix his knee before he goes to a new home. We WILL fix his knee. He deserves it. And so does his potential adopter out there.
A bit about Dillon's history He has spent his entire life as a stud dog before coming into care. His worth was in his ability to impregnate female dogs. He had no value as a beloved companion who needed love and care. So his health was never addressed. He didn't receive even a moment of vet attention. Dillon is slowly getting used to the challenges he now faces of being cared about. Even becoming an inside dog was almost overwhelming.
Our quote for his surgery is $1980 and that's not a cost we can cover without your help.
This is pushing us to the very limit.
Ella and Lucille's cataract surgery eyes a whopping $12 000, with your help we managed to keep our rescue afloat.
Rescue being the way it is, there's always a gamble that incoming dogs will be high needs and costly. So we have incurred expensive unexpected costs to get our Fab 5 ready for their forever homes and to go on to live healthy, happy lives.
We have zero regrets in taking them on but there have been a few sleepless nights questioning how we get through with our rescue intact financially. Dillon is booked in for June for his surgery.
